One of the things I learned from drinking espresso everywhere is that the taste of some of them can indeed be acidic, with hints of sweetness. This, as far as I understand, is related both to the coffee machines (La Marzocco and, to a lesser extent, Victoria Arduino) and the beans used.
The best way to taste this kind of espresso is without sugar. The suggestion originally came from the barista who served me one of the worst La Marzocco coffees I ever tried, but the hint proved to be true and successful.
The line between a good “acidic” espresso and a bad one is very fine and easy to cross, but I’m happy to say that, without any doubt, the coffee from Waylander’s Yard is the best I’ve ever tried on this side of the taste.
It’s made with a Victoria Arduino and served with a little card filled with info on the beans used. In my case, it mentioned hints of cherry, among other things, and the taste indeed checked out.
Don’t count it as a first choice if strong, Italian-style espresso is your favourite, but I enjoyed this much more than I expected, and I need to give credit where it’s due.
