When you’ve been drinking coffee in British shops for a while, you start to notice details that unquestionably raise red flags.
One such detail is the use of La Marzocco machines. But another interesting red flag is when a menu lists only “double espresso” with no single espresso option.
When you see that, you know something isn’t quite right.
Sure, most places will serve you a single espresso upon request, but whether you order a single or double, it just won’t taste as it should.
It may sound like an absolute statement, and I’d be thrilled to be proven wrong, but so far, I haven’t found a place that offers a proper tasting espresso while listing only the “double” option on their menu.
Fatto A Napoli, which translates as “made in Naples”, is a new Italian-style cafeteria and pizzeria in Solihull. While this kind of red flag can be fairly common, this was the least likely place where I expected it to pop up, given the name.
The coffee was not completely dreadful, but tasted acidic and was far from satisfying. Despite hints of La Marzocco in its flavor, the machine used was a Conti. For what it’s worth, they served a very good cake.
However, when the espresso tastes more like it was made in Edinburgh than in Naples, it’s time to ask yourself a few questions.
