E L & N, New Street

E L & N coffee shop in Birmingham

The triumph of the form.

Stepping over the threshold feels like entering a flowery world of pastel colors. They put great effort into every tiny detail at EL&N, making everything cute, from the cutlery holders to the bags of sugar.

People seem to love it. It opened this year in Birmingham, and it’s not uncommon to spot patrons queueing outside, waiting for a much-desired table to become available.

Should you believe the hype?

Luckily, there’s substance too: baked goods are delicious. And they can make a fairly good flat white.

Espresso, though, is a different matter. It was so brutally acidic that I couldn’t finish it. Surprisingly enough, their machine is not La Marzocco but a Victoria Arduino. Nevertheless, this is something you wouldn’t even want to smell if you’re looking to enjoy a proper single espresso.

I might return for the baked treats and the lovely ambience but, unfortunately for EL&N, we’re rating espresso here.
